6 Common Treatments for Osteoarthritis

Natural remedies

Many folk remedies and supplements are said to be good for treating osteoarthritis symptoms. These include anti-inflammatory beverages, such as green tea, and pain reducers like ginger. One study [6] found that green tea helped improve cartilage protection. Beyond reducing osteoarthritis pain, ginger is also believed to slow the progression of the disease. A 2015 study [7] found that long-term consumption of ginger could help reduce the risk of disability due to osteoarthritis. Both of these remedies are to be taken in small amounts because of their potential side effects.

Chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine [8] are also frequently recommended for osteoarthritis treatment. They are both made of compounds found in cartilage, so they are thought to help regenerate lost cartilage in the joints. This claim is yet to be medically proven.

Massage, hot or cold compress, and Epsom salt baths are other natural remedies [9] that provide relief from osteoarthritis symptoms.
