Medication

There are many medicines you can use to treat osteoarthritis. This includes nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The Arthritis Foundation [10] recommends trying topical NSAIDs, such as Pennsaid and Flector, before resorting to pills. Pills you can use include ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen. These drugs can be purchased over-the-counter without a prescription. You may also use prescription medications such as hydrocodone and oxycodone for more serious symptoms. Both drugs are potentially addictive.
If the pain is severe, corticosteroids or hyaluronic acids [11] may be injected into the affected joints.
Surgery
For severe osteoarthritis that doesn’t respond to any of these treatments, surgery may be the only option [12]. This is usually performed on badly affected knee or hip joints.
Conclusion
Osteoarthritis is an incurable condition. The damage this disease causes to the joints is irreversible, but treatments can help prevent further damage to your joints. There are many treatments you can follow on your own, but it’s good to know when you need a doctor. Consult one if your symptoms worsen or don’t respond to typical treatment.
