Signs and Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

Stiffness

Osteoarthritis causes stiffness in the joints. This stiffness is most serious in the mornings, and the joints may feel rigid and hard to move. The stiffness also intensifies after periods of rest or inactivity. The stiffness you experience when you move usually wears off [4] once you’ve used your joints for a while.

Tenderness

Your joints may feel tenderness in your joints if you have osteoarthritis. This tenderness is marked by pain and stiffness. You might feel pain when you apply light pressure [5] to your joints.

Fatigue

Fatigue is a feeling of intense tiredness indicative of many different types of health conditions. It usually persists for a long time and is hardly relieved by rest or relaxation. Fatigue can be severe enough to hinder a person from carrying out their daily activities.

This symptom is often seen in people who suffer from osteoarthritis [6]. Cytokines, the chemicals that trigger inflammation in the body, can also cause fatigue in people with osteoarthritis.
