Rigid Adherence to Routines

Routine is usually essential for individuals with Autism. Most autistic children, teenagers, or adults in some cases have strict routines, rituals, or obsessions. Examples of rituals from autistic individuals include keeping objects they love in a certain place, like the bottom corner of a desk drawer. Some individuals may engage in a specific activity before bed or drink from a certain cup. People who are autistic may ask the same sets of questions and require a particular type of answer. Autistic individuals don’t like to break their routines at any cost. Parents may need to observe if the routines are affecting their children in any specific way. It’s important to know if it’s affecting the child’s social life or ability to learn. If the routines are negatively affecting the individual, behavioral training or treatments can help that person.
