Gas Under the Skin

In rare cases, you may feel a crepitus or “crackling” sensation when you touch the infected area. This sensation usually occurs due to the presence of gas produced by the bacteria as it eats soft tissue. Crepitus [4] is usually a sign that the infection has advanced and immediate medical attention is needed.
It is important to note that necrotizing fasciitis is a medical emergency that requires urgent attention. Treatment usually involves the removal of infected tissue via surgery. It may also involve administration of antibiotics [5] through the veins. To treat or prevent the development of health complications, doctors may recommend supportive care.
