Systemic Involvement

Necrotizing does not affect only the integumentary system. Studies show that multiple systems may get damaged due to the flesh-eating effects of necrotizing fasciitis. If left untreated, the condition can cause multisystem organ failure. Systems that are usually affected by this condition include:
- Cardiovascular system: Necrotizing fasciitis affects the cardiovascular system by causing low blood pressure. As the condition progresses, patients become more likely to develop heart conditions.
- Integumentary system: Tissues in the integumentary system may decay as a result of the infection.
- Immunologic system: The immune system responds to the bacteria infection. A common manifestation of immunological response is fever.
- Gastrointestinal system: This is usually manifested via vomiting and nausea. It is commonly an immune response to invasion of bacteria.
- Pulmonary system: Necrotizing fasciitis can cause respiratory failure in later stages. It is important to contact your doctor if you have been recently diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis.
- Genitourinary system: Necrotizing fasciitis can cause renal failure if it is not treated on time.
