Malaria Signs & Symptoms

Shakes or Chills

Feeling cold [2] and shivering is a common symptom of malaria, especially during cycles attack. At the beginning of the cycle, the infected person feels cold all of a sudden and starts to shiver, before experiencing other symptoms. Chills caused by the malarial infection usually last between six to twelve hours.

Some less obvious signs precede each malaria cycle, like irritability, insomnia, lack of appetite, and drowsiness. When the infected person starts to experience some or all of these feelings, it’s only a matter of time before sudden chills and shakes occur. After the plasmodium parasite enters into the red blood cells, it causes them to burst open. The rupturing of the red blood cells (erythrocytes) triggers the production of a toxic brown-colored substance called hemozoin, causing chills.
