Anti-parasitic Medication

These are drugs created to eliminate the plasmodium parasite. Some of the common ingredients found in these medications include Atovaquone/proguanil, Quinine sulfate, and Primaquine phosphate. These ingredients are found in common anti-malaria drugs like Malarone, Qualaquin Oracea, and Vibramycin. Other drugs like mefloquine, chloroquine, and artesunate have different compositions to fight [2] the infection.

The World Health Organization approved ‘Artesunate’ as the first-line treatment for severe malaria in the USA. Each drug is effective in combating one or more malaria parasites better than the others. For example, Mefloquine is used for the prevention and treatment of infection caused by P. vivax and P. falciparum.

There are five types of plasmodium:

  • Plasmodium falciparum (or P. falciparum)
  • Plasmodium malariae (or P. malariae)
  • Plasmodium vivax (or P. vivax)
  • Plasmodium ovale (or P. ovale)
  • Plasmodium knowlesi (or P. knowlesi)
