Causes of Shin Splints

Shin splints occur due to repeated stress on the shin bone by the tugging and pulling of the muscles and connective tissues in the lower leg. The pressure that comes with frequently jumping and running can cause your shin bone to get inflamed (swollen or irritated) and weakened.
If you are unable to rest your leg and give it time to recover after a strenuous activity, the damage can get worse and lead to severe pain. Such repeated stress can happen for many reasons, such as starting a new exercise routine or increasing your level of physical activity too quickly.
