Treatments for Seasonal Allergies

Use medication

There are many medications you can buy over the counter and use to suppress or treat your allergy symptoms. These include [3]:

Antihistamines: Oral antihistamines are the most common allergy medications and are used to relieve itching, runny nose, sneezing, and watery eyes. Loratadine, fexofenadine, and cetirizine are good antihistamines you can use for your seasonal allergy. Sometimes antihistamines work best when they are combined.

Decongestants: Decongestants provide temporary relief from a stuffy nose. Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed and Afrinol) is a common oral decongestant. Decongestants are also available as nasal sprays. Common nasal sprays include phenylephrine (Neo-Synephrine) and oxymetazoline (Afrin). You should use nasal decongestants sparingly as long-term overuse can worsen allergy symptoms.

Nasal sprays: You may also use cromolyn sodium nasal sprays to relieve allergy symptoms. These do not have serious side effects, although they are most effective when you start using them before your symptoms appear.
