Trigger Finger: Causes and Risk Factors

Gender, age, and hand injury

It is not clear why this is the case, but women are much more likely than men to develop a trigger finger. In a 2008 study [4], being female was found to significantly predispose a person to this condition.

Although people of any age can develop this disorder, it is much more common in middle-aged adults. If you are in your 40s, 50s, and 60s [5], you are at an increased risk of trigger finger.

You may develop a trigger finger due to a previous injury to your hand [6]. Depending on how the injury affects you, you might develop the condition shortly after the injury or a long time after the injury has passed. Trigger finger develops following an injury because the tendons of the joints have been badly affected.
