Trigger Finger: Causes and Risk Factors

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack the synovium of the joints of the body. It leads to multiple joint inflammations and, sometimes, destruction of the components of these joints. It is often triggered by an infection with a pathogen, but the condition persists even after the pathogen has been destroyed.

Along with diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis is one of the leading medical conditions that raise a person’s risk [8] of stenosing tenosynovitis. The immune system may attack the joints of the fingers and alter its normal structure, leading to trigger finger.

Not all cases of rheumatoid arthritis lead to trigger finger. Many do not, but it increases the possibility of the condition developing.
