Lewy body dementia [4] is a type of dementia that is characterized by deposition of Lewy bodies (a type of protein deposits in the brain). It is the second most common type of dementia after Alzheimer’s disease. Usually the proteins are deposited in the regions of the brain that are involved in thinking, memory and movement. It is characterized by visual hallucinations, movement disorders, poor regulation of body functions, cognitive problems, sleep difficulties, depression and apathy. People who are older than 60 years and those with a family history of a previous dementia condition are at risk of developing Lewy body dementia. When left untreated it can lead to severe dementia, aggressive behavior, depression, increased risk of injuries. Treatment of Lewy body dementia is symptomatic as there is no cure for the condition.
