7 Type of Dementia

Vascular Dementia

Vascular dementia [3] is the loss of brain function that occurs due to disruption of blood flow to the brain, this disruption leads to the impairment of functions such as reasoning, memory and planning capabilities. The condition may occur following a stroke. It should however be noted that not all strokes cause dementia, the development of dementia following a stroke depends on location of the occlusion that caused the stroke and its severity. The condition can also follow other diseases that damage the blood vessels and denies the brain of essential nutrients. It is characterized by confusion, memory problems, restlessness unsteady gait, frequent urge to urinate and inability to control passing urine and depression. Treatment of vascular dementia involves managing the underlying condition that led to the development of the disease condition. Symptoms improve as soon as the blood supply to the brain is restored.
