Pre-Stroke Facts: Signs, Causes & More

How Long Does a Pre-Stroke Last?

A pre-stroke lasts only a short time and resolves by itself. Most people who have a pre-stroke experience the symptoms for only around one to five minutes [3]. This is what is typical. In certain cases, the symptoms take as long as 24 hours to clear. Symptoms that last beyond 24 hours are usually caused by a real stroke.

If you have the symptoms of a pre-stroke, it is best to treat them as a medical emergency because you have no way of knowing how long the attack will last. This is especially important if the symptoms exceed five minutes. The only way to tell if you are having a pre-stroke or a stroke is usually after. It may be too late by then.
