What Is Meningitis Type B?

What Causes Meningitis B?

Meningitis B is also referred to simply as meningitis. This is a condition caused by the Neisseria meningitidis (N. meningitidis) bacterium. N. meningitidis contains many subtypes, known as serogroups. The most likely serogroup to cause meningitis B is serogroup B.

Over 50 bacterial strains can be traced to meningitis. Some other causes include:

  • Fungal infection
  • Viral infection
  • Parasitic infection

The most common causes of meningitis are bacteria and viruses. Viral meningitis is milder than meningitis B and tends to resolve on its own. The bacteria that causes meningitis B may also attack the fluid and membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, resulting in swelling. It may also cause septicemia.

Although it is uncommon, meningitis B can become deadly within 24 hours.
