Bursitis – Diagnosis and Treatments

Treatment for Bursitis

Bursitis may sometimes not be too severe and should disappear in a few days or a week. However, the first step to take to treat bursitis is to figure out the cause; this is to ensure you are not doing an activity that would contradict the treatment. The treatment would aim to relieve the symptoms. Some treatment for bursitis includes:

Medication & Injections

Medication in the form of a drug is usually the first type of treatment given if an infection causes the swollen bursa; the doctor would prescribe an antibiotic. There are also some over the counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAID) that would help to reduce the pain and inflammation.

An injection is considered a fast treatment and also very effective. The drug that is injected into the bursa is known as a corticosteroid.  A corticosteroid helps in relieving the pain and reducing inflammation. Only one dose of corticosteroid is good enough to do the job. Also, it should be noted that people with the infection are not supposed to take corticosteroids.
