The Symptoms & Signs of Chlamydia

Symptoms of Chlamydia in Females

According to the Children’s National Health System [4], up to 90 percent of biological females do not show symptoms of chlamydia at all.

In females, symptoms typically associated with chlamydia include [5]:

  • Painful urination
  • Bleeding after having sex
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Pain around the rectum or anus
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge that may be clear or murky
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding outside your regular menstrual cycle
  • Pain around the hips and in the abdomen

If chlamydia in females is left untreated, it can spread into the uterus and cause more serious complications and symptoms [6]. Untreated chlamydia can lead to the development of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID is marked by abdominal pain, fever, and stinking vaginal discharge. It can result in infertility and cause ectopic pregnancies. Ectopic pregnancies occur outside the uterus and can be life-threatening.
