What Are The Treatments for COPD?

Medication

Some medications can be used to treat the complications of COPD. These medications are prescribed to be taken regularly. Drugs to treat COPD could come in different forms, but they are mainly in the form of an inhaler.

Bronchodilator

A bronchodilator is a common COPD medication that comes in inhalers—bronchodilator help to relax the muscles in the airway area. When the muscles in the airways are relaxed, it will help relieve one of the coughing symptoms and make it easier to breathe.

There are two types of bronchodilators. There is the short-acting Bronchodilator and the long-acting Bronchodilator. The short-acting Bronchodilator is used before an activity, while the long-acting Bronchodilator that you use every day, continuously. The prescription of the type of Bronchodilator to use depends on the severity of the disease.

Asides from bronchodilators, different medications could also help treat COPD by making breathing more accessible, reduce airway inflammation, and help prevent worsening. These medications include inhaled corticosteroids [3], combination inhalers, oral steroids, phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitors [4], theophylline [5], and antibiotics.
