Treatments for Crohn’s Disease

Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory condition so doctors often prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs to deal with it. Doctors prescribe different types of anti-inflammatory drugs based on several factors. Your doctor may recommend:

  • Corticosteroids

These drugs reduce inflammation in your gut and calm your immune system. Doctors usually recommend this for only a brief period. They do not now work for everyone with Crohn’s disease and are not safe for long-term use. Corticosteroids are usually only prescribed for moderate to serious cases of Crohn’s disease that do not respond well to normal treatment. Corticosteroids your doctor may prescribe include prednisone and budesonide (Entocort EC).

Corticosteroids are only used for a few months and may be combined with drugs that suppress the activity of the immune system for better effectiveness.
