Dry Throat: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

Tonsillitis

This is an infection that affects the tonsils. Bacteria and viruses can cause tonsillitis. Symptoms of tonsillitis include:

  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Red and swollen tonsils
  • Hoarse voice
  • Bad breath
  • White patches on the tonsils
  • Dry throat.

Treatment of tonsillitis depends on if it’s caused by bacteria or a virus. If it’s by a bacteria, antibiotics would be prescribed by a doctor, if it’s by a virus, it should heal up on its own within 7 to 10days.

Mononucleosis

Mononucleosis or simply mono, is a disease that is transmitted from one person to another through a virus. A virus causes this disease. One of the main symptoms of this disease is a scratchy dry throat.

Because mono is caused by a virus, antibiotics won’t be able to treat it. Instead, getting enough rest, staying hydrated, over the counter medications and gargling salt water can help ease it off.

Conclusion

Dry throat can be common, and has happened to almost everyone at one point or the other. However, if it becomes too intense or goes on for too long, it is not advisable to wave it off as something normal. Take enough water daily and be conscious of your health and diet. Make sure to visit the doctor in case your case of dry throat isn’t getting better.
