Eczema vs. Rosacea: How to Tell the Difference

Causes of Eczema and Rosacea

Another name for eczema is atopic dermatitis. The exact cause of this skin condition is unknown. However, it has been traced to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. If you have eczema, there is a chance that you have a gene mutation that prevents your skin from maintaining a top layer protective barrier. This makes it easier for bacteria and irritants to enter the skin and moisture to escape.

Eczema outbreaks are usually caused by triggers. The trigger varies from person to person, but may include chemicals found in skin products or in the environment.

The exact cause of rosacea is also unknown, although it often runs in the family. Some possible causes include:

  • Follicle irritation
  • Overabundance of Demodex, [3] a tiny skin mite
  • Sun damage of the skin’s connective tissues
  • Abnormal or unusual immune or inflammatory response to specific triggers, such as extreme temperature, alcohol, spicy food, and exercise

Emotional triggers like stress can exacerbate both eczema and rosacea.
