Dry Eye Treatments: What Are Your Options?

Meibomian gland expression

Meibomian glands are in the margins of the eyelids; they prevent the tear films in the eyes from drying up. A large percentage of dry eyes conditions happen due to inadequate, complete absence and ill-functioning of these glands. The openings of these glands, when clogged, get dried up quickly, preventing the tear film from doing its job. The condition where tear films are dried up and unable to function correctly is called meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

In treating meibomian gland dysfunction, an optician does a procedure called meibomian gland expression. In meibomian gland expression, a forceps-type device is to apply pressure to the eyelids to squeeze clogged elements from the meibomian glands. It is essential to know that you must add a significant amount of force to the eyelids, which could feel uncomfortable but makes the glands function correctly afterwards.
