Lazy Eye (Amblyopia): Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment

Causes of lazy eye

Amblyopia has to do with developmental problems in your brain. Anything that affects the vision in either eye during a child’s development, is potentially a cause of lazy eye. Lazy eye occurs when your eyes do not receive an equal amount of use. And there are several factors and conditions that can lead to this. Some of which include:

Strabismus

This is the most common condition that leads to amblyopia. Strabismus occurs when there is an imbalance in the muscles in the eye that causes the eye to cross or turn. Strabismus is also known as cross-eyes, where it becomes difficult for both eyes to track objects together. This disfunction may be inherited, be as a result of an injury, or viral illness.

Other vision impairment

Some other vision impairments such nearsightedness [3], farsightedness [4], or astigmatism [5]. These other eye conditions can also result in amblyopia. It could be as a result of the treatment given not working equally for both eyes, therefore one eye getting better than the other. This can cause lazy eyes, and it is best you immediately see your doctor if you notice this.
