Nearsightedness VS Farsightedness: How to Tell the Difference

Nearsightedness

Nearsightedness means you can see objects nearby clearly, but you cannot see objects far away from you. This phenomenon is also referred to as myopia.

What causes nearsightedness?

Lights entering the eyes move from the cornea to the pupil and back to the retina. Your eyes convert this light to images to help you see.  The primary function of the retina is to transfer the light to the optic nerve [1] and send electrical impulses to the brain.

Nearsightedness is accompanied by a refractive error which prevents light from focusing on the retina [2]. The severity of your refractive error depends on the shape of your eye. Refractive errors are more severe in rounded or long eyeballs.

According to the American Refractive Surgery Council, nearsightedness can be caused by environmental factors such as the use of mobile phones, electronic readers, and computers.
