Red Eye: Causes, Treatment & Prevention

A Dry Eye

Above the eyes, there are tiny glands that produce tears. They function to keep the eyes lubricated and protected. Insufficient tear production results in dry eyes.

Studies estimate that between 5% to 50% of people have dry eyes at some point in their lives. Women, those over the age of 50, and people who wear contact lenses have a higher risk of developing the illness.

If you have dry eyes, you can notice that your eyes turn red. Other signs comprise:

  • a burning, itching, or stinging sensation
  • sensitivity to light
  • feeling like something is in your eye
  • sluggish vision (that comes and goes, especially when reading)
