Giant Cell Arteritis
Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a medical condition that describes the inflammation of blood vessels present in the temples. It could also affect the arteries in your scalp, neck, and arms. The cause of giant cell arteritis is still unclear but doctors assume it an autoimmune disease that the immune system mistakenly attacks and inflames the blood vessels. By narrowing down the lining of the arteries and prevent blood from flowing well, an individual with GCA may experience headaches alongside blurred vision, double vision, or vision loss. According to the American College of Rheumatology, giant cell arteritis is usually prominent in individuals above the age of fifty.
For this condition, corticosteroids are used as a treatment procedure. Corticosteroids are a class of drugs that reduce inflammation in the body system. Besides, they also lower the activity of the immune system. The treatment procedure should start early to help prevent blurred vision or complete vision damage.
