Metatarsalgia (Ball of Foot Pain): Symptoms and Causes

What are the symptoms of metatarsalgia?

The first sign of metatarsalgia is severe pain. The pain usually starts gradually, and worsens over time. You may feel relief when you place your foot and feel extreme pain when you exercise, walk, or stand. You may experience the following in your foot:

  • You’re walking with pebbles or a marble in your shoe.
  • You will feel an extreme burning or shooting pain in the ball of your foot
  • Your toes are tingling or numb

In some cases, you may notice the pain in your foot get exacerbated anytime you:

  • Stand
  • Run
  • Walk barefoot
  • Engage in a high-impact sports activity
