Morton’s Neuroma: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Most Effective Treatment for Morton’s Neuroma

There are various treatment methods that are recognized by World Health Organization (WHO) for treating Morton’s neuroma. Your doctor will recommend treatment methods that work for your symptoms and reduce irritation in the swollen nerve.

The most common treatments for Morton’s neuroma treatments include:

  • Shoe pads: Over-the-counter (OTC) shoe pads cushion the area around your nerve and relieve pressure.
  • Orthotic devices: Orthotics are shoe inserts that provide support and comfort to your feet and keep your toes in the right position. You can use over-the-counter orthotics or custom-made inserts.
  • Pain relievers: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) relieve pain and swelling. Don’t use SAIDs for more than 10 days in a row. Ensure you speak with your doctor before using NSAIDs.
  • Footwear changes: Wear shoes that have wide, deep toe boxes to reduce pressure off your affected nerve. You can use a stretching device to widen shoes you already own.
  • Corticosteroids: Corticosteroids are prescription drugs that treat inflammation. Your doctor may prescribe cortisone shots to reduce inflammation in the nerve.
  • Icing: Placing ice or cold packs to your affected foot can reduce pain and reduce inflammation. Do not place the ice pack directly on your skin. You can wrap the pack in a thin towel.
