Conditions with Similar Symptoms

The following conditions may share tarsal tunnel syndrome-like symptoms. A differential diagnosis may benefit from comparisons.
Inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, characterizes the widespread ailment known as plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia serves as a shock absorber and supports the foot’s arch. Heel pain from plantar fasciitis is frequently characterized as a sharp ache in the heel. Plantar fasciitis pain typically worsens in the morning, steadily worsens during the day, and may get better with stretching activities. The discomfort also differs from the tingling and shooting pain connected with tarsal tunnel syndrome.
Pain in the foot or ankle can result from a wide range of conditions, including diabetes (diabetic neuropathy) [6], posterior tibial tendinosis, stress fractures, some rare disorders like reflex sympathetic dystrophy [7], and some conditions that affect the peripheral nervous system (peripheral neuropathy).
