Hypothyroidism and Medications

A person may have aches, pains, stiffness, and swelling in their muscles and joints as a result of hypothyroidism. The thyroid gland generates insufficient amounts of hormones in people with hypothyroidism or an underactive thyroid.
According to a 2017 study, rheumatoid arthritis, which can also cause excruciating joint swelling, may have a connection to thyroid conditions. A blood test can be done by a doctor to determine a person’s thyroid hormone levels. Taking synthetic thyroid hormones is a form of treatment.
Ankle swelling is an adverse effect of some drugs. These drugs include:
- antidepressants [6]
- hormone-containing medications such as birth control tablets
- prednisone for high blood pressure and calcium channel blockers
Consult a doctor if you think a drug side effect may be the cause of your swollen ankle. If the swelling is bothersome, they could recommend diuretic drugs or advise ways to reduce it.
