6 Common Treatments for Influenza

Drink Fluids

Drink plenty of fluids [4] while you have the flu. This can help you stay hydrated. Drink water, warm soups, sports drinks, fruit juices, nearly anything. Stay away from caffeinated drinks because these are known diuretics. Besides keeping you hydrated, drinking more fluids may help thin the thick mucus clogging your nose and respiratory system.

Staying hydrated is especially important for children. While flu can cause diarrhea in anyone, children are more likely to be affected by this symptom. Diarrhea causes water loss through stool and can quickly become dehydrating. Drinking fluids is a way to offset this loss of water.

If your child has chapped lips or looks dehydrated despite drinking plenty of fluids, you should take them to the hospital.
