Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia

What are the Causes of Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia?

The major cause of the condition is Gene alteration. Studies show that 90% of people diagnosed with Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia have a particular Gene altered. The gene is called MYD88. In some cases, other genes such as CXCR4 may be affected.  The two genes are used to transmit information between cells to keep them functioning properly. When a DNA changes, the gene becomes stuck in the “on” position, so cells are active for a longer period than usual.

Experts are yet to find out the factor responsible for the DNA changes. Studies show that the condition can not be inherited and that the gene changes occur as you age. As a result, Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinemia is mostly observed in elderly people. Also, men are more susceptible to the condition than women. People in this state are more prone to the disease:

  • 50 years or older
  • White people
  • Have a Disease known as MGUS (monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance)
  • Have a family member with a condition that damages their lymphocytes.
