Warm Water Technique
The warm water approach, a different natural remedy, advises doing the following to treat a hiatal hernia:
- Drink a glass of warm or room temperature water as soon as you wake up.
- As you stand up, extend your arms out to your sides, bringing your hands to your chest while bending your elbows.
- On your toes, raise as high as you can and then quickly lower yourself. Repeat this at least ten times.
- Raise your arms high in the air and take 15 rapid, short breaths through your lips.
When Self-Care Measures Don’t Work
If lifestyle modifications and home remedies don’t work, your doctor can suggest either surgery or a prescription drug.
Among the prescribed drugs for hiatal hernias are:
- Esomeprazole(Nexium) [3]
- Lansoprazole (Prevacid)
- Rabeprazole (Protonix)
- Pantoprazole (Prilosec)
- Omeprazole (Aciphex)
Three steps are commonly involved in hiatal hernia surgery. The doctor:
- Moves the hiatal hernia from your chest cavity back into your abdomen
- Repairs the valve in your esophagus where your esophagus joins your stomach
- Tightens the hole (hiatus) in your diaphragm
