12 Foods to Avoid with IBS

Insoluble Fiber

Vegetables, whole grains and fruits are rich in fiber. Fiber adds to the bulk of food and helps improve gut health. This important food is generally classified into two types: soluble and insoluble.

Plants are good sources of fiber and they generally contain both types. Some foods are higher in one type of fiber than the other. Fruits and oat products are particularly high in soluble fiber, while whole grains and vegetables contain more insoluble fiber.

People with IBS often have different reactions to foods. You should go observe the effects certain foods have on your system if you’re not sure whether to avoid them. For some people with IBS, insoluble fiber worsens their symptoms. In others, it has no effect at all.

Soluble fiber is often better for most people regardless of gender or age. The American College of Gastroenterology recommends taking soluble fiber supplements as an effective treatment for IBS. [4] Even if your system is very intolerant to insoluble fiber, you might be better off getting most of your soluble fiber from soluble fiber supplements.
