Keep Your Kidneys Healthy: 10 Foods to Avoid

Dark-Colored Sodas

Doctors advise people with diabetes [3] and kidney disease to stay away from sodas. Certain types of sodas (dark-colored varieties) contain high amounts of phosphorus to reduce discoloration, add flavor, and increase shelf life. Most dark-colored sodas contain 90-180 mg of phosphorus in every 12-ounce. While this may not be as much as the daily upper limit, sodas contain a different form of phosphorus than is normally found in foods. The phosphorus is not bound to protein but it is available in salt form. This means they are easily absorbed into the blood.

A healthy kidney can aid excretion of excess phosphorus from the blood. However, persistent increase in phosphorus levels can increase your risks of having a heart disease [4].
