Causes and Risk Factors of Restless Leg Syndrome

Medication

Medications for neurological diseases like Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis do not necessarily provide relief from restless leg syndrome. Sometimes they increase the risk of developing the condition.

Other types of drugs, whether prescription or over-the-counter, can trigger or aggravate restless leg syndrome. Antipsychotics and antidepressants which alter the dopaminergic pathways in the brain can also contribute to this disorder. Opioids, antihistamines, and anti-nausea medications may also worsen restless leg syndrome.

Conclusion

Although the risk is greater in older and middle-aged women, anyone can have restless syndrome. This includes children. The cause of this disorder is still unknown, but it is important to get tests done if you experience symptoms. This can make treatment easier, particularly if it is linked to an underlying health condition.
