Varicocele: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

Possible Complications of Varicocele

If your varicocele is large, it may increase your risk of other complications, such as:

  • Low testosterone (Hypogonadism in men): Testosterone is produced in human testicles. The hormone testosterone starts to develop during puberty. It is a hormone that initiates male characteristics, increases libido (sex desire), and supports the development of strong bones and muscles. Low testosterone can make you depressed, have smaller testicles, have less sex desire, and have less muscle mass.
  • Azoospermia: Azoospermia [2] is the condition in which there is no sperm in the ejaculate (semen). To fertilize an egg cell (also known as an ovum or oocyte), sperm cells are reproductive cells. Thus, an embryo is produced, which later transforms into a fetus. Male infertility can be brought on by azoospermia.

Does varicocele cause erectile dysfunction?

There is not enough research to support the theory that varicocele causes erectile dysfunction (ED), but there may be a link. According to some studies, people who receive varicocele treatment may still sometimes fail to achieve an erection, but not as often.
