Help and Treatment for Depression

Thankfully, depression is a curable medical condition and the treatment can range from taking medications to undergoing therapy and sometimes hospital admission. These are some ways in which it can be treated:

Self Help

Getting effective rest, setting goals, healthy eating, drinking plenty of water, regular exercises, engaging in activities you enjoy and spending time with loved ones and avoiding alcohol and drugs. Living a life filled with such a clear mind helps to reduce the symptoms of this mental disorder.

Medications

Antidepressants are the prescribed medications for correcting the brain chemistry that causes this condition. Some of the drugs are tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), [4] monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), L-methyl folate, N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonists. It is advised to go for a proper checkup with the doctor and get the best drug that will work because some of the drugs have side effects. Stopping the use of the drugs can cause withdrawal symptoms and worsen the condition.

Psychotherapy

It is an effective form of treatment. This is also known as talk therapy and it involves talking with someone (therapist) that can bring ideas and skills to help cope with the strange attitudes. Psychotherapy helps a depressed person learn about their condition and also helps to relieve anxiety, learn how to manage unhealthy conditions, recover from traumatic experiences, regain a sense of satisfaction, and explore relationship.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

This type of therapy gives psycho-social intervention that tries to automatically change the negative thoughts that increase depression. Some techniques that are used in this therapy include journaling and thought records, relaxation and stress reduction techniques, role playing, exposure therapy and many more.
