What Is Dyscalculia?

Difference between Dyslexia and Dyscalculia

Dyslexia [3] and dyscalculia are often mistaken for each other. Although they are both learning disorders, there are some major differences between them. In the most general terms, these two break down as follows:

  • Dyscalculia: Is a learning disorder that is more specific to a person’s ability to do math.
  • Dyslexia: This is a learning disorder that affects a person’s ability to read.

It is important to recognize that these conditions are different, although they both fall under the same diagnosis, “Specific learning disorder,” in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) [4]. Even though it is rare, it is possible for someone to have both dyscalculia and dyslexia at the same time.
