Anticonvulsants
They can also be referred to as antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). [2] These drugs are used majorly to prevent epileptic seizures by slowing nerve signals in the brain. Examples of anticonvulsant drugs include narrow-spectrum AEDs for specific types of seizures, or broad-spectrum AEDs for multiple seizures.
Its Effectiveness
Majorly two types of anticonvulsant drugs showed effectiveness in preventing migraine headaches. They are divalproex sodium and sodium valproate. Several clinical studies have also shown topiramate to significantly reduce migraine frequency. Your doctor will prescribe to you which anticonvulsant to use.
Its Side Effect
Common side effects of anticonvulsant drugs may include fatigue, rash, hair loss, paresthesia, weight gain, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Anticonvulsant may take up to 4 to 8 weeks before you see improvements, when you use it to treat migraine prophylaxis.
