The Types of Auras You May Experience During a Migraine

There are numerous more symptoms that can accompany migraine attacks in addition to aura. They can differ between people, with each episode, and depending on the stage or phase of the migraine.

Aura symptoms

Aura symptoms typically appear over at least five minutes and can remain for up to an hour, however in around 20% of cases they can stay much longer. Aura is something that some people sense after the headache has begun, rather than before.

Aura symptoms include the following:

  • dark patches or loss of vision
  • being aware of bright patches or light flashes
  • speech difficulties
  • The sensation of “pins and needles” in an arm or leg
  • ears ringing
  • Olfactory auras: an enhanced sense of smell and the ability to detect fictitious odors
