What Causes a Migraine?

Lack of sleep, insufficient sleep, excessive sleep or change in sleeping patterns are potential causes. Research showed that people are who slept for less than the required sleeping time had severe symptoms of hemicrania compared to those who slept for longer hours. Too much sleep may affect the essential chemical responsible for transmitting nerve signals in the brain called serotonin. A change in serotonin levels may trigger a migraine headache. [4]

A change in sleeping hours may take some getting used to because the person may suffer hemicrania within the first few days or weeks before the body adjusts. Insufficient sleep increases the risk of developing hemicrania more than oversleeping.
