What Causes a Migraine?

Food

Unknown to many, some foods can trigger hemicrania, like salty and fatty foods due to high-sodium content which may increase blood pressure. Processed foods are packed with preservatives and artificial sweeteners like aspartame which may cause hemicrania in some people.

Alcohol relaxes contractions in the blood vessels and increases blood supply to the brain, which may cause migraines. At the same time, caffeine affects the levels of a chemical compound called adenosine, resulting in migraine attacks. Persons that are prone to hemicrania are advised to avoid starvation because it causes blood sugar levels to drop and increases blood pressure. [9]
