Bruxism (Teeth Grinding) – Symptoms and Causes

Sleep Disorders

Bruxism does not occur alone; it mostly occurs with other sleeping disorders. Studies have shown that teeth grinding is found mainly in people that sleeping disorders such as snoring, obstructive sleeping apnea (OSA) and temporary loss of breath during sleep. Several parasomnias such as sleep talking, volatile or injurious behavior during sleep, sleep paralysis [3], hypnagogic/hypnopompic hallucination (partial consciousness between sleep and wake) are also related to teeth grinding. Obstructive sleeping apnea is the most common factor because it is related to an arousal response. In order to stop the temporary loss of breath, the body responds by several methods such as snoring, gasps, tooth grinding and mumbling.
