Tooth Nerve Pain: Causes, Pain Relief, and Remedies

Tooth nerve pain causes

Pupal sensitivity affects the pulp in the tooth and is caused by tooth decay, gum infection, a chipped or broken tooth, and also pressure from friction caused by grinding or clenching the teeth too much.

Dentinal sensitivity is caused by the damaging of the tooth enamel by external factors like cold, heat, acid, sour and sugary foods, then it gets to the nerve endings in the dentin layer of the tooth. Causes include effects of teeth whitening, the use of hydrogen peroxide, untreated cavities [1], cold water, using tough toothbrushes, and brushing too hard. Also, post gum surgery can leave the tooth roots exposed causing tooth nerve pain.

Therefore general causes of tooth nerve pain include:

  • Tooth decay
  • Gum infections
  • Chipped and fractured tooth
  • Worn fillings
  • An exposed tooth root
  • Drinks and foods that are too hot, cold, acidic, sugary, and sour
  • Trauma to the jaw
  • Dental abscesses [2]
  • Bruxism [3]
  • Pulpitis [4]
