Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (PPMS)

What Are the Differences between PPMS vs. SPMS?

The differences between secondary progressive multiple sclerosis and primary progressive multiple sclerosis include:

  • SPMS usually starts as a diagnosis of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. It then develops to become a more serious condition with no relief of symptoms or remissions.
  • Secondary progressive multiple sclerosis is the second phase in the diagnostic procedure of multiple sclerosis. Relapsing-remitting is a different diagnosis.

What Are the Differences between PPMS vs. RRMS?

The differences between primary progressive multiple sclerosis and relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis include:

  • Relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis is the most popular type of multiple sclerosis. According to research, more than 85 percent of diagnoses of MS involve RRMS. PPMS is one of the most uncommon types of MS.
  • Women are more susceptible to relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis than men. Women are also more prone to PPMS than men.
  • RRMS is accompanied by more series of new symptoms than PPMS.
  • In most cases, you may not experience any symptoms when RRMS is in remission. The symptoms are not usually severe if they are present.
  • RRMS have more brain lesions than PPMS. It can lead to more complicated conditions if left untreated.
  • RRMS tends to be diagnosed much earlier in life than PPMS, in around the 20s and 30s, as opposed to the 40s and 50s with PPMS.
