Post-Polio Syndrome: What It Is, Symptoms, Causes, Treatment & More

Risk Factors of Post-Polio Syndrome

There are certain factors that can increase your risk of developing post-polio syndrome, such as:

  • Severity of initial polio infection: The more severe the initial India, the more likely that you develop symptoms of post-polio syndrome.
  • Recovery: The greater your recovery after acute polio, the more likely it seems that post-polio syndrome will develop. This may be because greater recovery is due to additional stress on motor neurons.
  • Age at onset of initial illness: If you developed polio as an adult or adolescent, it increases your chances of developing post-polio syndrome.
  • Excessive physical activity: Too much exercise, exhaustion or fatigue might mean you are overworking already stressed-out motor neurons and increase your risk of post-polio syndrome.
