Post-Polio Syndrome: What It Is, Symptoms, Causes, Treatment & More

Preventing Post-Polio Syndrome

Polio vaccination is the only means of preventing PPS. Getting the polio vaccine is the only method to accomplish this. The polio vaccine should be given to children starting at the age of two months in a total of four doses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States. You can still obtain the polio vaccine as an adult if you didn’t have it as a child.

There is nothing you can do to avoid getting post-polio syndrome if you have had polio. Why some polio survivors experience PPS and others do not is a mystery to scientists.
