What Causes Staph Infections

Septic Arthritis

This is most often caused by staphylococcus. It is a condition caused by infection of joint spaces by staphylococcus. Joints of the knees, hips, shoulders, fingers and toes can be affected. Common symptoms include swelling of the joints, joint pain and fever.

The staphylococcal organism that causes most staph infections is Staphylococcus aureus. It is usually the causative organism for staph skin infections, endocarditis, staph pneumonia, toxic shock syndrome and many other staph infections, staph osteomyelitis, food poisoning and several others. [4] This organism is commonly found in the nose and on the skin of many healthy people. Cuts, abrasions and other injuries can, however, introduce these organisms into the body leading to infections and diseases. The most common types of this organism are:

  1. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
  2. Methicillin susceptible Staphylococcus aureus
  3. Vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus
  4. Vancomycin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus
  5. They are named according to their response to common antibiotics used in the treatment of staph infections (Methicillin and Vancomycin) [5]

There are about 30 other types of staphylococci that can also cause staph infections in man.

People that are at risk of developing staph infections include:

  1. People with weakened immune systems
  2. Newborns
  3. People with chronic disease conditions
  4. People with skin injuries and surgical incisions, etc.
